Are there free programs I can use to draw construction schematics?

I've designed / built some lab-equipment during graduate school. I'd like to illustrate the equipment construction in a similar manner as was shown in the Magnetic Stirrer guilde. But, I don't have access to any software capible of drawing.

Do you have any recommendations for free software that could be used for drawing schematics?

thanks!

Google Sketchup and Blender are free options available for download online.

Autodesk also has free licenses for students and faculty that you may be able to access, as well. SolidWorks and Rhino are also two other programs that can be used, but usually must be purchased.

For electronic sketches, I'm less familiar with the available options, but I'm sure there are some free options online.

Hope one of these programs solves your problem!

Google's Sketch-Up tool is free to download and use. It's not the most intuitively built program but, you can create just about anything from simple drawings to C.A.D.-like blueprints in 3D! I will say that there is a learning curve to this program. You will spend a lot of time reading the Help section and some more time online in the FAQ section and tutorial.

There are others. Just Google it!

Good Luck!

Hi, I have succesfully used Freecad (http://www.freecadweb.org/), is multiplatform, and works great.

Pros:

  • Multiplatform.
  • Able to generate STL files to 3d print.
  • Comes with an embedded python console to help in the design.
  • High quality graphics.

Cons:

  • there is a learning curve to start using it --> you can grab some tutorials in youtube
  • there are some bugs sometimes --> we will have to wait for the next release ...

Cheers,

Hachi
