Tekla Labs was started by scientists and engineers at the University of California, Berkeley. After visiting university science labs in South America, we found that a shortage of basic equipment often inhibits scientific innovation.
Tekla Labs houses an online community of equipment blueprints that detail low cost, high quality alternatives to expensive commercial equipment. With this community, we aim to empower scientists all over the world: high school teachers, university researchers, and independent laboratories.
Laboratory equipment is expensive, and high-quality donated equipment is seldom provided to the people that need it most. Not only is equipment built in-house often cheaper, but maintenance and repair can also be performed using locally available materials. Our interactive online community connects researchers worldwide to exchange help with equipment solutions.
This do-it-yourself (DIY) model is a sustainable approach to increasing access to lab equipment, circumventing costly shipping and logistics.
